This page is an archive of iMAL's wiki that operated between 2012 and 2022. It documented projects, residencies and workshops mostly taking place at iMAL's Fablab.

Older & newer Fablab projects are now found at fablab.imal.org

Fabbing

The fixtures of the lamps in our office are almost all partially or completely broken. As a result, most of the lamps are kept from falling to the ground by scotch tape. This clip is a first prototype for a piece that can be clicked onto the existing lightingfixture to hold the lamp in place.
How to create spikes and rivets in PLA :link can be very usefull for join multiple 3D printed parts together. Much cheaper than M3 screws :-)
Some experiments in curved structural folding, based on a template by Dries Molemans.
Radio Controlled vehicles is part of my hobbies.I am flying multicopters (or at least I try to) with OpenPilot control boards, and I used the FabLab's 3D printer to make protection cases. In the beginning...For my first attempt, I just downloaded a ready-made case in STL format:  It does the...
A small project for school: Home (interiors) in the sixties. This is a very simple project for school: the house frame is laser-cut  on 3mm MDF.A printed picture of the house is glued on top. Doors and windows can be open and reveal several pictures of interiors from the 1960 period.
A very simple project: laser-cut skyline templates on wallpaper to paint a room. The end-result:

TABLE by

This model was created by our team of 3 students who study at ULB Architecture for structure courses. We tryed to do a table without glues and screws ! And the idea is to use the structure to make some storage.First of all we made a 1/2 model with 3mm MDF to check that the table was quite good ....
From your idea to the 3D print with some simple stepsPrepress -> Slicing -> PrintingPrepressGet or create your 3D model. See link and www.rascomras.com or use a 3D modeler to create your own. Export it to STL  (if necessary). STL is a file format...
This model is a 'foldout' papercraft model of a project that is currently being designed at Urban Platform architects.
A  first version for a wedding invitation in the form of a chapel door.
This is a robotized microphone clamp. It can rotate along 2 axis.I design and print several parts :Here is a close up of the printed parts :And of course a video to show it moving with a microphone :
Inkscape is a popular Open Source vector graphics editor which can be used with the Cyborg laser cutter at iMAL.SmartCarve, the laser cutter software operating the Cyborg, is using the DXF file format for importing vector graphics and Inkscape allows us to easily export our SVG projects in DXF...
This is what we want to produce, by scanning the face of a person and printing it. Mini people! What you needA Kinect or related PrimeSense-based depth sensor (like the Asus Xtion)A Windows PC with a powerful graphic card with recent drivers (you need OpenCL support) A 3D printerThe process in...
The idea is to 3D scan the face of a person, then 3D print a portrait. To speed up the process, we keep the printed model minimal, cutting off the back of the head and the neck of the 3D model. The result is a bit reminiscent of carved cameos, although we use a frontal view instead of a side view.©...
You should avoid to breath the soldering's fume with my Soldering Fume Extractor. It's convenient and easy to move. You need :2 fans : 12cm computer fana 12V powersome screw2 laser cutted sheetMy model look like thisYou can customize the laser cutted sheetyou need to align the fansyou can then...
PrieroMatic project in beta version. Description : Insert a coin, choose the sin you want to be forgiven, then you hear some sound and a voice telling you how to gain your redemption. Mood: cynical and funny TODO: create sound content and LCD message, the kind of sin to choose (funny)....
iMAL has a series of Philips SHP2000 headphones, they're decent for the price but very fragile. To get aquainted to 3D modeling with FreeCAD, and because it's a damn shame they're all falling in pieces, I decided to re-make the most fragile part of the headband. This is still a work in progress...
This is a simple software to create the layout of each face of a box. It's BoxCreator , it's a processing code so you need the processing software and also a processing library as described in the linkAs you start the software. You have a nice screen with a box.You have some setting to adjust.First...
The machine should be calibrated, the calibration data are saved in the machine. You can view them in GCode through:Machine -> OnBoard Preferences -> HomingCurrent working values for iMAL's Thing-O-Matic : X home offset (mm) : -54.281 Y home offset (mm) : -56.448 Z home offset (mm) : 97....
There should be a dedicated computer in the FabLab with all the softwares installed to operate the MakerBot. But if you ever needed to install everything on an another computer...This is for iMAL's Makerbot Thing-O-Matic with its MK6 extruder (0.5mm noozle)!Make sure the Makerbot is...
[Work in progress]What does it do ?I developed that software to help people to select the most appropriate settings for the Cyborg LaserCutter. You specify the speed/power min/max values and the software generate a layer per speed/power combinaison. Each layer will contains a pattern to...
Our first Makerbot 3d printer (bought May 2011) is a: Thing-O-Matic with a MK6 extruder (0.5mm noozle - 2.88mm filament). The build platform was modified with an alumium plate for maintaining its flatness under heating(we don't use the Automatic Build Platform, not really usable). The platform...
This is what we want to achieve by simplifying the mesh.  It take a STL file in input, take the biggest heap of triangles, smooth it and decimate it. What you needA STL filePython + VTK (it's very convinient to use the package they have on their website: link...
Experiments with regular 3d geometry and  a bunch of algorithms. Ingredients: Processing, Hemesh, Makerbots, OpenSCAD, skeinforge.
